Sculpture of Heracles from the Temple of Aphaia / Άγαλμα του Ηρακλή από τον Ναό της Αφαίας

Sculpture of Heracles from the Temple of Aphaia, east pediment detail (F. Tronchin)

East pediment of the Temple of Aphaia.
The first Trojan war, not the one described by Homer but the war of Heracles against the king of Troy Laomedon is the theme, with Telamon figuring prominently as he fights alongside Heracles against king Laomedon. This pediment is thought to be later than the west pediment and to show a number of features appropriate to the Classical period: the statues show a dynamic posture especially in the case of Athena, chiastic composition, and intricate filling of the space using the legs of fallen combatants to fill the difficult decreasing angles of the pediment. Part of the eastern pediment was destroyed during the Persian Wars, possibly by a thunderbolt. The statues that survived were set up in the sanctuary enclosure, and those that were destroyed, were buried according to the ancient custom. The old composition was replaced by a new one with a scene of a battle, again with Athena at the center

Βronze handle decorated with a small horse / Χάλκινη λαβή τριποδικού λέβητα

Βronze handle decorated with a small horse. Very likely from an Argive workshop. About mid-8th cent. B.C.

Large bronze tripod cauldrons with ornate handles were usual dedications to the major Panhellenic sanctuaries from the Geometric to Classical times. The Homeric poetry mentions the practice of conferring tripods as prizes in competitions honouring gods or deceased.

The Danicourt collection of gems in Péronne

In 1874 Alfred Danicourt, collector of works of art and antiquities, created a municipal museum for his collection in Péronne. There it grew with a variety of gifts and legacies. At the beginning of the First World War the smaller and more precious objects were boxed and hidden, while the other contents of the museum were destroyed by bombardment and theft in 1917. After the war the museum was reopened with what was still surviving of the old collection, but in 1939 the most precious objects had again to be hidden for safety. In 1955 the museum was installed in the Town Hall, where it remains as a splendid display for the public (see HERE).

In 1967, at the invitation of the Mayor of Péronne and with the assistance of the Curator, M. Jean Baradat, J.Boardman and R.L. Wilkins visited Péronne and were able to study and photograph the collection of gems in two articles: Revue Archéologique (=RA) 1970, 3-8, and 1971, 195-214; expressing the intention of publishing the others at a later date. This has not been done until this presentation of the whole collection on this website.

The collection is small but choice. It contains one of the first recorded Mycenaean gold rings and several exceptionally fine Phoenician, Etruscan, Greek and Roman intaglios and cameos. It is published here with the 1967 photographs, in the form of a handlist rather than a catalogue raisonée, to apprise scholars of its contents. Measurements are in mm, giving the face of each stone first.

I am indebted to Martin Henig for most helpful comments and corrections to the following summary catalogue.

The stolen Caryatid from the south porch of the Erechtheion / Η κλεμμένη Καρυάτιδα

A Caryatid from the south porch of the Erechtheion. The figure is in London, the best preserved. Those left on the building have now been removed from the polluting atmosphere of Athens to the new museum. About 410 BC. (London 1816,0610.128)

The Ionic order of the Erechtheion offers more contrast with the Ionic of the Archaic period, than does the Doric Parthenon with its predecessors. In the capitals concave channels in the volutes were now the rule where earlier, but for rare and primitive exceptions, they were plump convex. In the Erechtheion capitals there are even double channels, and the usual egg-and-dart between the volutes has a cable pattern above and a floral band (as in Archaic Samos) below. There had been some variety in the bases too, the Erechtheion having a type developed in Attica. The shafts have twenty-four flutes, with flat ridges between, against the Doric twenty with sharp ridges; and the Ionic column as a whole retains its tall slim proportions against the squat Doric, which made it a natural choice for positions where the mass of a Doric colonnade could have looked unbearably heavy. All the carved mouldings of these buildings were painted, some with coloured glass inlays also, and it now seems that even the flat wall surfaces were toned down with a colour wash to reduce the glare of direct sunlight. Add the realistic colouring of the figure sculpture and the difference between what we see today in Athens and in museums and what was seen in antiquity becomes almost impossible to conceive.

A visitor to the Acropolis would have done well to save for the end his inspection of the little Temple of Athena Nike, on the bastion overlooking the entrance. It was a small Ionic building, erected over what had become the traditional position for this shrine, a mirror in miniature of the more elaborate Ionic of the Erechtheion. A low stone balustrade surrounded the sanctuary, and the relief carving upon it offers perfect examples of the statuary style typical of the end of the 5th century, successor to the rather heavy Classical idealism of the Parthenon. Figures of Victory are shown in a frieze leading animals to sacrifice and erecting trophies, attended by Athenas .

The thin material of their dress is pressed so close to the body that some are virtually nude studies, an effect anticipated in the Parthenon pediments , the transparency and swirl of the drapery lending emphasis to the form of the body, and not either concealing it or having a mass and movement of its own apart from the body beneath. The treatment of dress and of the human body, especially of women, has come a long way during the 5th century.

Grave stele from the Ilissos / Επιτύμβια στήλη από τον Iλισό

Marble grave stele of a youth, found in the bed of the Ilissos river in Athens ca. 340 BC.

Grave stele, made of Pentelic marble. Found in 1874 in Athens, in the bed of Ilissos river. A nude youth leans against a pillar with crossed legs. In his left hand he holds a lagobolon (a stick for flinging at hares), which together with his dog sniffing the ground characterises him as a hunter. At the right side of the sculpture, the dead youth’s aged father looks at him in grief, leaning on his staff. In the holes on the hair of the two figures were attached metal wreaths. At the bottom of the stele, the young slave of the deceased, exhausted by his grief, has fallen half asleep on the steps. The plasticity of the young man’s body, which occupies the space with its monumental grandeur, indicates that it has been inspired by a free-standing statue of a hero. This outstanding monument, originally in the form of a naiskos (small temple), has been attributed to the Parian sculptor Skopas, or to a sculptor from his workshop. Height 1,68 m., width 1,10 m.

Parthenon Sculpture, Metope XXX, Centaur and Lapith, 5th cent.

Parthenon Sculpture, Metope XXX, Centaur and Lapith, 5th cent. BC
The metopes (pentelic marble slabs about four feet square carved in high relief) in this sequence come from the south side of the Parthenon, above the architrave.

Here, the dominant centaur tramples down on the Lapith, who tries to keep him at arms length whilst rather feebly reaching for a stone with which to fight back.

This is one of a series showing the battle between the centaurs, a wild tribe with the lower body of a horse, and the Lapiths a people from the mountains of Thessaly in northern Greece. The symbolism is the struggle between barbarism and civilisation.

The British Museum, London

Figurines, statues ect. / Eιδώλια, αγάλματα κ.α
Female statue, votive offering of Nikandra to Artemis, discovered on Delos island (today at the National Archeological Museum, Athens).

Marble female statue, found on Delos, Cyclades, dedication of the Naxian Nikandre
ca. 650 BC.

Female statue of island marble, found on Delos, Cyclades, in the sanctuary of Artemis. One of the earliest life-size statues in stone. It probably represents the goddess Artemis. According to the inscription carved on the garment on the left thigh, the statue was dedicated to Apollo by the Naxian Nikandre. Naxian work, typical of the Daedalic style.Height 1,80 m.

The “Sacred Gate Kouros”, archaic sculpture from the Sacred Gate area in Athens.
In the spring of 2002, during excavations at one of the city gates of ancient Athens, the Sacred Gate in the Kerameikos, surprisingly a startling find was made under the Sacred Road which led from Athens to the sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis: a cache of Archaic marble sculptures which originally had stood on grave precincts of the Athenian aristocracy, had been destroyed by the Persians in 480 B.C. and buried under the road when the Sacred Gate was erected.
The cache comprised this almost complete statue of a kouros, youth: a work of the first great marble sculptor of Athens, the so-called Dipylon Master (named after a kouros head found in 1916 in the Diplyon gate). Near this amazing sculpture three statues were found: two statues of lions and one of a sphinx.

Lion of Kea

Lion of Kea is the leading tourist attraction in Kea. And we do not think anyone leaving the island without having seen the laughing lion. Lion of Kea is an ancient statue that has come to light over the years and it is located a country mile from the center of the village, and reclines regally halfway up a steep slope, smiling at all who come to pay their respects.
Lion of Kea is carved sometimes prior to 600 BCE and it is massive 6 meter long rock, by an unidentified artist from an indefinite period; this powerful but friendly fellow holds his own secret. Lion of Kea lounging near a Grecian hilltop, the ancient stone Lion of Kea is amazing not only for its comparatively good condition, but also for its strangely sunny demeanor.
Lion of Kea is a natural stone slab, and few people say it is created by Acropolis. Alternately recognized as the Lion of Loulis, the beast is a chosen among both tourists and locals who’ve named the lion, “Liontas.” The creature’s ancient existence, if not his odd smile, are thought to be linked to the local mythology. Some legend says; the island of Kea was once home to population of water nymphs whose beauty, long with their lovely island. As this was almost always a recipe for disaster in ancient Greece, then sent a lion to lay waste to the island. The lion statue remembers the fabled kerfuffle to this day.
No one is sure whether the smile on the lion’s face is an intentional feature or just the product of hilarious weathering, but either way, it continues to be a preferred feature on the island it once supposedly destroyed. This smiley stone feline is meant to represent a mythical lion that almost destroyed the island of Kea.
