The “Sacred Gate Kouros”, archaic sculpture from the Sacred Gate area in Athens.
In the spring of 2002, during excavations at one of the city gates of ancient Athens, the Sacred Gate in the Kerameikos, surprisingly a startling find was made under the Sacred Road which led from Athens to the sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis: a cache of Archaic marble sculptures which originally had stood on grave precincts of the Athenian aristocracy, had been destroyed by the Persians in 480 B.C. and buried under the road when the Sacred Gate was erected.
The cache comprised this almost complete statue of a kouros, youth: a work of the first great marble sculptor of Athens, the so-called Dipylon Master (named after a kouros head found in 1916 in the Diplyon gate). Near this amazing sculpture three statues were found: two statues of lions and one of a sphinx.
